Getting to music and sound, we see that SuperTux 2 is up to the expectations. In the end, I like the graphics and I think they suit the game very well. He looks pretty cool and also funny when he stops from a slide, dodges his head, performs a back-flip or a bottom-smash. The animations are nice and the fact that it sometimes snows, that some enemies explode, some slide, others are flying make the game feel alive and fun to play. The characters are well shaped and they’re not in low resolution. Some may argue that they don’t feel the rush to save Penny, that there is no drama, but I believe that this part was taken care of by other means, as I’ll shortly show. The background of levels is simple, in certain areas is snowing and the overall result inspires peace and quiet. There are also levels featuring other themes, like green forests. The setting consists, for the most part, of ice and snow. For what it is, I believe there was no need for more complex graphics. On the graphical side, SuperTux 2 adopted simplicity. So are the checkpoints throughout the levels. Other than that, all is fine and the bottom smashing move is actually quite helpful at times. Anyway, this sometimes leads to some increase in the difficulty of certain areas in the levels where platforms are too narrow. Surprisingly, Tux also slides on grass, as there are levels where is no ice and snow. Because the game is set in Antarctica, almost everywhere is ice and once Tux gains some speed he slides. The controls feel nice, they are responsive and easy to use. There are also ice stars that will make Tux invincible for a short period of time and also enemy ice cubes that if not paid attention to, they can damage players’ Tux. A cool feature worth mentioning is that players can revisit past levels if they want.Īs I showed above, after entering a level Tux has to smash or dodge enemies, find eggs and flowers hidden in the “?” marked boxes, grow up and get stronger. Then, the map shows up and players are invited to enter a level. After Penny is kidnapped, players retake control of Tux and exit the level. Players actually take control of Tux from the very beginning and they guide Tux to the meeting place, where he finds Penny, a three and a boom box. Why? Because the game features a nice, yet very basic, interactive story. Well…, if we look at the actual gameplay, the adventure actually begins before Tux met Penny. Overall, the new concept of SuperTux 2 is better defined and more flexible, giving the game a lot more personality. Secret areas were introduced, as well as a tutorial throughout the first few levels of the game and a broader map including new levels. For example, Tux can jump, performing a back flip and he can also smash bricks and newly implemented wooden boxes with his rock-solid bottom. In SuperTux 2, players have more mobility, meaning they can go back through a level, as far as the beginning of it. While SuperTux 2 mainly retains the same concept, new features were added and some were replaced. The fact that Tux could only go forward could also result in getting stuck on some levels because players didn’t gain enough speed to jump over a high obstacle.īut things changed quite a bit with the release of SuperTux 2. A similar feature, and a quite annoying one in my view, was the impossibility to go back in a level. For the rest of the game, players had to help Tux jump from platform to platform in order to get to the next level. He could also get rid of the enemy by jumping on it. It featured a 2D setting where Tux had to bump his head into some bricks to collect coins or power-ups that would make him grow up and achieve the ability to shoot enemies. Looking at the concept, we see that SuperTux started, for the most part, as a clone ofSuper Mario Bros. So, SuperTux 2 is an enhancement of the first milestone of the game. When I’ll talk about SuperTux, I’ll be referring to the first phase of the game, which was released in 2003 and when I’ll talk about SuperTux 2, I’ll be referring to all that followed, which is basically the second milestone, released as a stable version in 2016. The game was originally created by Bill Kendrick, and it’s now currently developed by the SuperTux Development team. In fact, SuperTux is a still ongoing project, whose development was divided in milestones, each with its specific objectives. The title suggests that SuperTux 2 is the second game in a series, but it’s not a sequel. But today’s review is not about Super Mario Bros., but a so-called clone: SuperTux 2. This game goes a long way back and I think it was, and still is, so appreciated because it manages to entertain people despite its apparent simplicity. One of the most popular video game of all time is Super Mario Bros.
